We read and hear about it everywhere and nearly every expert from as far afield as psychology and the spiritual dimension has addressed the importance of living in the here-and-now.

But sometimes things are easier said than done, and don’t we know it! There’s one thing that makes our attempt at being in the moment especially difficult and that thing is our new best friend - the smartphone.
The alarm on our phone sounds, we press the snooze button a couple of times before we finally open our eyes. It is a new day and life has granted us the opportunity to live another whole new sixteen hours. The hand reaches for the phone again - and what do we do? We start scrolling through our Instagram feed. (Don’t tell me you don’t do that;) It happens automatically and we spend the next 15 minutes staring at the screen, looking at how other people live their lives. Then come the news notifications, we check the weather and most probably WhatsApp.
We feel compelled by this relatively new urgency to start the day catching up with the events of the world. It seems to be moving at a faster and faster speed with no let up, while our various apps vie for our attention. But what if we do it like this instead?
Be in the moment - wake up slowly. Listen to yourself and hear what your body has to say. Pay attention to the sounds around you – birdsong, the rustle of the breeze on the curtains. Be thankful and be opened to everything that is there and what is to come.
Make your favorite cup of tea or coffee and take in the fragrance. Instead of looking at the screen, look out the window and marvel. The aim – and it is a true luxury, is to spend the first 40 minutes of the day and the last hour before bedtime away from the phone and its constant notifications and distractions. And all of a sudden, we will see the things that are around us, notice the pleasure they give us, live in the here-and-now. There is no better place to be. At least for a little while.
